SideChef Alternative for Hands-Free, Voice-Guided Cooking
Short answer: Stick with SideChef if you want a big guided catalog, meal plans and one-click grocery shopping. Look elsewhere if what you mainly want is to cook your own recipes hands-free — blogs, family notes, a link you saved — by talking to them. For conversational voice on recipes you bring, apps like Maelivia or Mise are a better fit. For "next step" style voice commands on a tidy recipe box, Pestle is worth a look. SideChef can still be the right app for a lot of people; it just isn't the only hands-free option anymore.
Disclosure: Maelivia's team wrote this post. We built Maelivia, so we're biased — but we don't claim it's better overall. SideChef is strong at things we don't do. Features and prices change; double-check before you subscribe.
What SideChef is good at
SideChef is an all-in-one cooking app: find a recipe, plan the week, shop the ingredients, then cook step by step. On its own site and App Store listing (checked October 26, 2026), it stands out for:
- A large catalog. The US App Store listing describes about 18,000 step-by-step recipes with photos and how-to videos at many steps — useful if you like being shown what "dice the onion" should look like.
- Meal planning. Personalized weekly plans, cookbooks, filters by diet, allergens, time and ingredients you already have.
- Grocery lists and shopping. Build a list from a recipe and shop through partners such as Instacart, Walmart, Amazon Fresh and Target (availability varies by region).
- Timers and guided cook mode. Built-in timers and step-by-step navigation so you don't lose your place in a long recipe.
- Voice commands. SideChef's download page highlights hands-free cooking with voice commands alongside the photos and videos. Historically that has meant command-style guidance (next step, repeat, timers), including on devices like Alexa and Portal — not a free-form chat about your grandmother's stew.
- Optional Premium. Free to download and use for core recipes, meal plans and grocery. SideChef Premium is listed at $4.99/month or $49.99/year (US App Store) and mainly unlocks exclusive on-demand cooking classes and premium class content.
If "what's for dinner, then buy it, then cook it from their card" is your loop, SideChef is built for that loop.
Where SideChef is a weaker fit (if you bring your own recipes)
This is the bit people usually mean when they search for a "SideChef alternative."
SideChef can save recipes from the web (paste a URL or use share/clipboard) and lets you create your own recipes in the app. So it isn't locked to its catalog. That said, the product is still organized around its library, meal plans and shoppable ingredients. Voice and step photos are at their best on SideChef's own guided recipes. If most of what you cook is:
- a blog post you bookmarked,
- a text your aunt sent,
- a caption you pasted from social media,
- or a PDF/scanned card you want to talk through,
…you may find yourself fighting the app's center of gravity. Import exists; conversational voice on that import is not SideChef's main story.
What "hands-free" actually means
People use the phrase for very different things:
- Voice conversation — you ask "how much salt was that?" or "what's next after the onions?" and get an answer that knows which step you're on.
- Voice commands — you say "next" / "back" / "start timer" to move through a guided flow.
- Screen-awake cook mode — you still tap, but the screen stays on and the current step is large.
- Gestures — a wave or face gesture flips the step (no talking).
SideChef sits mainly in voice commands + guided photos/videos. Maelivia sits in voice conversation on a recipe you imported. Pestle is closer to command-style voice on your saves. Mise is another conversational option for your own recipe box. None of these is "hands-free" in every sense — pick the kind you actually need.

When Maelivia is a better fit
Maelivia is a voice-first cooking assistant for iPhone. You bring a recipe (link or text), it breaks it into steps, and you cook by talking:
- "What's next?"
- "Go back."
- "How much salt?"
- "Set a 10-minute timer for the rice."
It keeps several timers going and speaks up when one is done. It works in English and Turkish. There's no built-in recipe catalog and no meal-plan/grocery stack like SideChef's.
Better fit if you:
- mostly cook recipes you already found elsewhere,
- want conversational voice, not only "next/back",
- cook in Turkish as well as English,
- are on iPhone and okay without Android for now.
Keep in mind: Maelivia isn't on the App Store yet (coming November 2026 per maelivia.com). Free tier is one voice session. Pro is session-based (weekly / monthly / yearly as above). Imports are part of Pro and capped at 20 a day.
When SideChef is still better
Stay with SideChef — or use it alongside something else — if you:
- want dinner ideas without hunting blogs,
- use meal plans every week,
- like step photos and how-to videos while you cook,
- want grocery lists that go straight to a delivery/pickup partner,
- cook on Android as well as iPhone,
- or mainly need command-style voice on SideChef's own guided recipes.
A fair setup for some households: SideChef (or another planner) for "what are we eating and what do we buy," and a voice-first app for the night you're cooking a recipe you already trust.

FAQ
Is SideChef free? Yes for core use. You can download it and use a large set of recipes, meal planning and grocery features without paying. SideChef Premium ($4.99/month or $49.99/year on the US App Store as of October 26, 2026) adds exclusive cooking classes and premium class content. Confirm current pricing in the App Store for your country.
Does SideChef import my recipes? Yes, in a limited sense: you can save recipes from the web (URL / share / clipboard) and create your own in the app. The product is still centered on SideChef's catalog, meal plans and shoppable ingredients. If import-and-talk is your main need, compare voice-first apps built around your recipe box.
What's the best SideChef alternative for voice? Depends what "voice" means. For conversational questions on a recipe you pasted, look at Maelivia or Mise. For "next step" commands on recipes you save yourself, look at Pestle. For catalog + meal plan + grocery with guided steps, SideChef may still win — voice alone isn't a reason to leave it.
Can I use Maelivia and SideChef together? Yes. Nothing stops you from planning and shopping in SideChef, then cooking a personal recipe hands-free in a voice app. They solve different parts of the week.
